to hurricane sandy, that is not actually how it worked out. nobody knows exactly how this particular october surprise hurricane is going to affect the technical act of voting. we have had some early voting suspensions and voter registration deadlines and absentee ballot deadlines change in a lot of states directly affected so there may be a technical direct effect of the storm, but more broadly, and especially in terms of these key swing states, this storm is a major unexpected external variable that, frankly, rivals the election in terms of the country's attention. it turns out this october surprise does have political salience. at least in this sense. the most eagerly awaited endorsement in this presidential race happened just before the storm. right? that was colin powell. president obama today actually released an ad highlighting the colin powell endorsement. >> will you endorse president obama? >> yes. when he took over, we were in one of the worst recessions we had seen in recent times. close to a depression. and i saw over the next several years stabilization come back in the financia

that was hit the hardest by sandy, it's just going to be a cruel day. we're already watching the winds crank up. even in new york the winds are picking up. we're going to get a winter storm out of this with large waves at coastal areas. the first thing we deal with is the winds. the winds are going to whip the waves up. you can see the storm coming up the coastline. and now the clouds are increasing. even the rain is going to begin to increase in areas along the mid-atlantic. the winds will be the first concern. the wind gusts are already really picking up along the jersey shore all through areas of long island. if we go over to our other weather computer on weather 2, you can see the wind gusts are the highest along the gulf coast and also down along the new england coastline. that's where we're going to see the worst damage from the winds. i think areas of long island could see some winds gusting possibly up to 50 to 70 miles per hour. we're also going to continue areas of possibly new england looking at winter weather advisori advisories. we could get snow out of this. even areas around phil

. in the aftermath of hurricane sandy, congress can't ignore the near bankrupt flood insurance program. while we fix the short-term problems, however, let's make it more effective, efficient and actuarially sound so that it will spare lives, property and the federal treasury. overhauling the flood insurance program would solve the most immediate challenges caused by extreme weather events likely due to global warming. we may even be able to discuss climate change in a more thoughtful and rational way. based on work i've done in the past with congressman ryan and jeff flake, i know agriculture reform is a ripe opportunity. taxpayers cannot afford to lavish unnecessary subsidies on large agri business while harming the environment and shortchanging small farmers and ranchers. surely, tea party republicans and members of the progressive caucus can come together to improve nutrition, wildlife habitat, hunting and fishing while strengthening family farms. and since big bird dodged a bullet during the presidential campaign, maybe it's time to address the vital role that the federal support for public broa

storm aimed at the hard hit northeast. and al is in sandy point, new jersey, again this morning. al, good morning to you. >> they built this berm, this dune a mile long yesterday to protect against the nor'easter yesterday to put in an access point and bringing in dump trucks to bring in more sand to protect against a storm surge. let's show you the northeast, because they are making a way along the new jersey coast and bringing in strong northeasterly winds and wind gusts from 30 to 40 miles per hour, and we are expecting airport delays along the i-95 corridor and expecting storm surge from two to four feet of storm surge along the eastern board. the storm surge is going to be causing problems on the beach erosion, and shore waves of 8 to 12 feet. and we have rain with the system. we are talking about anywhere from two to four inches of rain, but look at what is behind it. along the new york/new jersey shoreline, on into pennsylvania and upstate new york, we are talking about snow. some areas are picking up six to nine inches of snow. the philadelphia area has a winter storm warnin

just on the heels of sandy. al is in point pleasant beach, new jersey again this morning. al, good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah and matt. they built this birm, this dune about a mile long yesterday to protect against this nor'easter coming in. they are putting in an access point. they will be bringing in dump trucks to put in more sand to protect against storm surge. let's show you the nor'easter right now. it's making its way up along the new jersey coast. it's bringing in strong northeasterly winds. wind gusts of anywhere from 30 to 40 miles per hour. take a look. we're expecting airport delays today along the i-95 corridor. we're al expecting storm surge coming in. anywhere from four to -- two to four feet of storm surge along the eastern sea board. as you can see, the storm surge is going to be causing problems as far as beach and erosion, flooding, shore waves of eight to 12 feet. wind gusts of 65 miles per hour. we have rain with the system. we are talking anywhere from two to four inches of rain. but look at what's behind it. along the new york/nrnew jersey shor
